Whether you’re putting down new flooring or repairing your hardwood floors, glue can get into some annoying places. We’ll show you how to remove glue from wood floors so you can get your flooring or repair work finished looking the way you want it.

How to remove glue from wooden floors

Wooden flooring is a popular choice for bedrooms, dining rooms, living rooms etc. It’s easy to clean and upgrades almost any room in the house. Whilst wooden flooring is easy to install, accidents can happen, especially with wood glue. In that case you need to move quickly.

A hand with a cloth swipes away a stain of glue from the floor.
With the help of a lubricant and a cloth, you can make your wooden floor look like new again

When it comes to removing glue from wooden floors, follow these steps:

  1. If it’s only a small amount of glue then you can use a damp cloth. If the glue is still fresh then simply wipe it off with a damp cloth. For a more thorough clean, add some washing-up liquid to the cloth.
  2. Use heat. A larger amount of glue may prove more difficult. Grab your hair dryer and apply heat to it. The heat will weaken the bond, which means you can then use a scraper or knife to scrape it off or simply peel it off with your fingers.
  3. Try applying white vinegar or vegetable oil. Eucalyptus oil, lemon oil, or petroleum jelly are all particularly good at removing glue from wood. Simply soak a paper towel and press it onto the glue before leaving it for five minutes. You should then be able to peel the glue off.
  4. Loctite glue remover will also reliably remove glue from wood. Simply unscrew the cap, cover the area with glue remover and place a tissue on top of the area. Leave for a few hours, then remove the tissue and wipe the area clean.

How to get super glue off hardwood floors

Hardwood floors are strong and resilient, but every now and again you might need to make some small repairs with super glue. If you spill some excess super glue on your hardwood floors there are various means to get it off.

Here’s how to get super glue off your hardwood floors:

  1. Gently scrape the glue off using a scraper or knife.
  2. Apply some acetone-based nail varnish remover to the area with a clean cloth. Lightly dab the area until all of the glue has come off. Then clean the surface with another damp cloth to ensure there is no acetone left on the floor.
  3. Apply some  Loctite glue remover. All you need to do is unscrew the cap, cover the area with the glue remover, cover with a clean tissue for a few hours and then simply wipe the super glue off.

Getting glue off wood floors: It starts with the right glue

Make your life easier by choosing the right glue for any repairs to your wood flooring. We recommend using glues with precision nozzles or gel non-drip formulas which also allow time for you to reposition the parts. This way, you’ll have less glue to remove from your wood floors.

For small repairs, we recommend using Loctite’s Super Glue Liquid Precision Max as it comes with an extra-long nozzle which means you can apply the glue in even the most difficult to reach places. It’s resistant to all conditions and is perfect for use on wood.

For larger repairs, we recommend using Loctite’s 60 Second All-Purpose Glue. This fast and repositionable glue is extra strong and dries in 60 seconds! It also has a gel formula which means you can apply it vertically too. And, it bonds to both porous and non-porous materials so it’s ideal for all kinds of repairs to your wooden floors.
