Gluing cardboard together: What you need to know

If you’re making a sign, creating a model, or working on a craft project, you need to know how to stick cardboard together – and how to make it stick for good.

You need a glue that’s not only quick and easy to use, but which also keeps the pieces firmly in place in the long term.

So, when you’re gluing cardboard together, make sure you choose the right adhesive – a high-quality adhesive like Loctite All-Purpose Glue.

You should also read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, ensuring that the product has all the qualities you need. For instance, if you’re gluing cardboard together for a craft project that must look good, choose an adhesive that dries transparent.

In the section below, we’ll show you exactly how to glue cardboard together, so you can get the best results.

How to glue cardboard together: Step by step

First, make sure you’ve got all your materials:

  • cardboard
  • extra art supplies: scissors, pens, coloured paper etc.
  • adhesive like Loctite All-Purpose Glue

When using the adhesive, remember to take safety precautions. Work in a well-ventilated space and ideally wear safety glasses.

Here’s how to glue cardboard together, step by step:

  1. Prepare the space and materials. Protect your work surface and surrounding areas   with scrap paper. Pre-fit the pieces of cardboard and check that you’re happy with the positioning.
  2. Prepare the adhesive. Familiarise yourself with the adhesive, particularly any safety precautions.   Twist the cap/nozzle clockwise onto the tube and then remove the cap.
  3. Apply the adhesive on one surface carefully. Then press the cardboard pieces together.
  4. Reposition if necessary. If you want to move the pieces, do so immediately. When you’re happy with the positioning, press the pieces together with steady, firm pressure for a few seconds. Then leave it alone for 60 seconds.
  5. Wait for the adhesive to dry. Dry time can vary, so check the product instructions for specifics. Loctite All-Purpose Glue requires 24 hours to dry completely. Until then, avoid using the cardboard.
  6. Clean up. Replace the cap immediately after use. Then put the adhesive upright in a cool, dry place, and keep it safely stored for next time.

That’s how to stick cardboard together successfully!
